Iranians all across Iran are celebrating the coming of the New Year, Norooz, on March 20th, the vernal equinox, despite the Islamic regime’s prohibition on this ancient celebration and heavy security throughout the country.
First, however, before March 20th, we Iranians celebrate Charshanbeh Suri (Wednesday Eve Festival, also known as the Festival of Fire) on the last Tuesday night/Wednesday eve of the year. We set small bonfires and we jump over them to cleanse and purify our spirits for the coming of the new year and to let go of the negative feelings, stress and pains of the passing year. We tell the fire as we jump over it, my yellowness (the color of melancholy) to you, your redness (the color of purity and joy) to me. We play games, eat wonderful food and just enjoy being with those we love and our fellow compatriots. It is a most beloved celebration for our people.
